Latest Tony D Release

This flurry of instrumentals serves as a musical biography of the last few decades for two time Juno award winning, Tony D, on this multi genre guitar album. Tony is well known for his contributions in the blues music genre with The Tony D Band and MonkeyJunk but his background is considerably more broad than that. This album brings together that blues foundation with a heavy leaning into psychedelic rock (70s Big Muff), Pseudo Flamenco with a surf angle (Argentinean Surf Tango) with a thread of jazz winding through it all.

Tony has worked as a full time professional musician for over 40 years. He began his musical journey on the guitar, learning mostly in the blues, rock and jazz stylings. His teachers were Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Albert King, Wes Montgomery… basically any vinyl record he could get his hands on. By the time he was 17 years old he was making a living by playing in a band full time. At the age of nineteen, Tony was given the opportunity to play rhythm guitar, for three days, for the legendary Buddy Guy. Years later he had the prestigious opening slot for the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan at Ottawa’s NAC.

Early in his career he recorded 7 indie solo albums as the Tony D Band, two of which were picked up by a European record label (Tramp Records). He has been a contributing artist on countless projects with other artists including Dutch Mason, James Cohen (neo- flamenco) and Suzie Vinnick. Most recently he has spent 15 years as the lead guitarist for the band MonkeyJunk. They have released 5 full length recordings (all on Stony Plain Records), toured extensively in Canada, the USA & Europe and received many accolades. That list includes 3 Juno nominations and two wins for Blues Album of the Year (2012 & 2018), 25 Maple Blues Awards (collectively) including Guitarist of the Year (2010) and a Blues Music Award (international). In 2020 (during the pandemic) Tony released his latest project, SPEAK NO EVIL, a compilation of instrumentals that span his career.

From The delta to the desert it all comes from places of devotion, musical devotion.

“Basically, I’m like Lightnin’ Hopkins with an electric guitar" - Tony D
